- Context
Background

Pregnancy can be an exciting time for new and experienced mothers alike, there is always something new to learn and experience through each individual journey. Parents, especially first time mothers, are eager to learn and soak up all the information they can for the next nine months. As exciting as this is it can also be a bit stressful at times.

Problem

Expecting mothers often face a wide range of challenges during their pregnancy, while there are many resources available it can be overwhelming and stressful to find reliable information and support.

Solution

This app seeks to reduce the cognitive load of expecting mothers by making the pregnancy journey a more organized and informative one as it educates mom on the baby and herself throughout the entire duration of the pregnancy with the primary focus on antenatal care and baby growth tracking.

- Research
User Interviews

I like to start my favorite part of the design process off with a strong user interview. As someone who has no experience with pregnancy it’s important that I get as much information from people who have. Time to interview our mommies!

  • Identify the most common pain points of expecting mothers both new and experienced

  • Understand how expecting mothers use pregnancy tracking apps and how often

  • Determine what information expecting mother find the most valuable during pregnancy

  • Identify the most important sources of information for expecting mothers

Research Objectives

I interviewed a few different moms, those who used pregnancy tracking apps and those who didn't, as well as first time moms and moms who have been moms for a long time. Like mine!

Insights

After finishing my affinity map and seeing what our moms had to say, I was able to gather a lot of information.

  • Having access to as much information as possible is something every mom wanted to know

  • Seeing the baby’s growth weekly was also very important to every mom

  • Weekly information on themselves as well

  • Having awareness in regards to the issues and dangers they may face while pregnant was also a priority

  • They would like to have a sense of organization regarding appointments within a pregnancy tracking app

Competitive Analysis

Moving on to competitive analysis, I compared some of the top apps in 2023, as well as a few that the moms recommended, to see if they had what our moms were looking for.

For the most part the apps all do the same thing however, the moms I interviewed were looking for postnatal care amongst many other things and only one app was the total package

- Define
Persona

Claire Parker is going to be a single representation for all of our moms. This is her first pregnancy and apparently like all moms she wants to be well informed about everything, especially postnatal care since this is her first pregnancy after all.

We’ve one of my favorite parts in the entire design process. How Might We…

So, how might we essentially solve the users' problems? Looking back at the research I’ve done here is what I’ve decided to do-

  • Add a calendar for users to have their appointments conveniently in the app

  • Devote a section to information for different trimesters, weeks, nutrition, exercise etc.

  • Include a baby growth Tracker

  • Separate sections for information on mom and baby weekly

Flows

I mapped out two flows just to be able to conceptualize how the user would move through the potential app because by this time I had somewhat of a lay out already in mind.

By integrating these user flows, the aim to provide a seamless and cohesive experience for expecting mothers. The flows work together harmoniously, sharing data and facilitating a logical progression from one feature to another.

This integration enhances the overall app experience, allowing users to easily navigate through different sections, access relevant information, and manage their pregnancy journey effectively.

- Ideation
Low & Mid Fidelity Wireframes

As usual the beginning of my ideation phase begins with me, a bottle of lemonade and terribly illustrated wireframes on my ipad.

Next came the mid fidelity designs as soon as I finished my sketches. I decided I wasn’t going to test at the mid fidelity stage this time some of the UI elements were important to testing this time.

These screens presents a comprehensive view of the baby's and mother's growth and development during pregnancy. It may include a visual representation of the baby's size, such as fruit or animal comparisons.

Additionally, the mother's growth and development can be tracked, displaying her progress throughout the pregnancy journey. This could include details like weight gain, belly size, and other relevant metrics.

This screen provides a collection of informative articles related to pregnancy and parenthood. It may showcase a list of titles or cards representing each article.

Users can click on an article to access detailed information, which could include topics like nutrition, exercise, prenatal care, or parenting tips.

UI Elements

After going back and forth and mulling it over I decided on the colors I wanted to use. This app came a long way, it went from being a monochromatic app to a barrage of colors and finally somewhere in between. After looking into color theory I tried to incorporate some colors that represent fertility and motherhood just a little bit.

- Testing
Success

Finally, I was able to test the finished product with some more of our moms and a couple of other people who didn’t identify as mothers. Total Success!

All participants were able to find what they were looking for, completed every task and enjoyed the colorfulness of the app.

Looking Back

For a lack of better words this was fun. I enjoyed creating a concept from the very beginning to the very end. There was so much more I wanted to include but due to the time constraints I was not able to. However, I learned to prioritize by looking at my research and determining what needed to be included in the MVP.

In the future I would be more mindful of my color choice and use less color. Less is certainly more.
